Creating solutions to one problem while ignoring another

On Saturday i joined the crew from Plan Zimbabwe and attended the launch ceremony of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence at the Africa Unity Square.

As expected, the speakers went to length about the need to stop violence both in the homes and in the community. Most speakers lamented the need for the inclusion of men in the fight against GBV as they are the major perpetrators.

However, a very interesting thing happened during the ceremony, after one of the Musicians had just finished one of his popular anti-GBV songs, three homeless children walked in to the venue and went on straight to sit right in the front row. No-one really got to notice them as everyone seemed to be in the Anti-GBV mood.

Surprisingly, some even tried to turn them away for whatever reason but no one really noticed the need for attention these children indirectly expressed. They were lucky enough however to be noticed by the guys fro Plan Zimbabwe who went on to interview them. One of them, 'Tanatswa' said she had come with two friends just to have fun and collect some reading material.I was really touched to know that of all the things you would have expected the little homeless children to have come for, you would never expect them to have just come to find something to read!

We later on met the three girls and one of them even had a couple of books and brochures with her. They were accommodated by the Plan Zimbabwe Crew who then gave them 'Because I Am A Girl', 'Invest in Me' T Shirts.

I was greatly disappointed by the ignoramus attitude of the delegates and exhibitors at the event because i expected them to be the best people to know what exactly to do about the fate of these innocent little girls.

Lets hope that these children will find themselves a guardian angel, hopefully Plan Zimbabwe or other caring organisations to invest in the future of these innocent children before their dreams are crushed by the streets.

Domestic Violence on the Increase!

Domestic Violence cases seem to be on the increase these days and it makes one wonder where we are headed. According to statement by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights shows that domestic violence cases are on the increase since 2008 which recorded 1 940 cases. In 2011, 10 351 cases were recorded in the first quarter alone!

The Statement also shows that at least 7 people were killed by their partners in separate incidents in 149 cases of domestic violence recorded countrywide in just one week.

So men women and men are falling victim to violence and abuse daily but its not the number of recorded cases that's worrisome, but those that are kept under the rug because the victims are either ashamed or scared.

Lets please follow Tinopona's example and Speak Out Against Domestic Violence Before Its Too Late!

STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE NOW!

What has this world come to? NewsDay posted an article this morning in which local celebrity actress/DJ tinopona 'TinTin' Katsande is said to have been severely assaulted by her boyfriend over house chores!

One would think that we are way past the domestic violence age but hey, i guess some of us are just a bit primitive and cruel. As if the brutality was enough for poor Tino, some apathetic Zimbabweans went on to support the woman-beater posting harsh comments on Facebook accusing poor Tino of being the giulty party in the whole matter! One posted, " Tshaya maningi' rova speaker iyoyo inotaurisa unofunga kuti murume mwana wako here?", while another posted, " dai akatotsika huro chaiyo, mkadzi haafanire kujairira murume achidaro. wozongobhadhara fine wamurakasha".It seems as though some man are supporting the beating of women and at the same time are encouraging the act urge other men to go ahead and beat their wives because they can always pay fine after making their brutal points!

Simply put, this supporting of such ghastly acts is mirror to how uncivilized some of us are, we are all humans and such inhumane acts cannot be acceptable in this modern day society. The law should put up stiffer penalties for such acts as many men seem to be getting away with such grizzly crimes.

Everyone's Child

My heart bleeds everytime i pass by children begging on intersections along the various Harare avenues, i try by all means to give them whatever little i have so as to help out but is this the way to go or there is a lasting solution to this problem?

This one day as i was walking along Julius Nyerere Avenue a small girl begged me to give her some money and when i did she continued to follow me begging for more. This made me realise that nomatter how much we give to these children its never going to be enough because they will keep begging and it then becomes a case of instilling a dependence syndrome upon these children. I think what we have to do is make sure we as the community come up with a solution that will see the removal of these kids off the streets and finding them proper homes and according them the lives they deserve as human beings.

Another sore site is the mother and chid along San Nujoma Avenue who beg together, what hurts the most is the fact that at times you fing the mother all relaxed while the small child of around 5 does all the begging. Despite their predicament, the mother has somehow taught the small child to be overly rude to all those who refuse to help them and you find that at times the child shouts the nastiest vulgar words to innocent passerbys!

I not saying lets give them money but what im saying is in our African society as we knowit, every child is a child of the community and as such, every child has the right to be treated like a child and at the same time they have the right to be accorded a decent life short of the gruesomeness of the streets

Friday 24 August 2012

It really bothers what our mothers sometimes go through just to make sure we never go hungry. I am proud to use my blog as a platform to let the world know how grateful we as African children are of some of the extraordinary feats our Super Women go through.

Everyday on my way from work i notice a mother with a child strapped on her back along Samora Machel Avenue, my heart bleeds for her child knowing that the mother has no other means of supporting him/her. What bothers me even more is that the rags-clad mother is always there begging nomatter what time of the day you pass by.

An African proverbs goes 'it takes a village to raise a child' but im seriously doubting if thats still the case in our society, why can't we help the needy mother to raise her child, why can't we as a community come up with ways to help make sure our mothers get decent ways of making ends meet like helping them start self-help projects?

However, i think it is better for my mother to beg for money so as to send me to school and make sure im well fed than for her to steal. Case in point, a mother from Budiriro was fired from her $200/ month job as a maid for stealing $20 from her boss! I mean, why would a mother go to such extremes as stealing such little money and risk losing her job? The question i would like to ask her is, now that you have been fired, how in the world are you going to take care of your kids if you thought the $200 wasn't enough?

I feel sorry for her chidren who now have to go hungry all because their mother was greedy.

Guys if you were not grateful for the effort our mothers have to put and the extremes they have to go through just to put food in our stomachs then you have to start now!

19, Pregnant and Confused

Yesterday i met a teenage girl, 19 to be specific, who is facing a rather tough time. She is pregnant and worse still she is confused about who the father of her unborn child is.

Chido *not her real name* is an Upper Six student in rural Mashonaland East and has had relationships with two young men, one a student at University of Zimbabwe, the other works at a company in Harare. Both men were never aware of the other and they both do not know that they could become a father very soon.

The girl claims not to have told anyone else of the pregnancy and that not even her parents know of it and that the pregnancy is apparently 3 months on!The situation the girl is facing could mean disaster for her. One, she might get so stressed up that she could fail her coming Advanced Level Final exam or worse she could be abandoned by both men if they find out about her infidelity.

Chido is at the moment so confused she does not even know who to turn to or what to do, asa friend the little i could do was advise her to talk to her parents particularly her mother or at least someone she trusts to be understanding and not judgemental.

Such unfortunate circumstances should not haunt such a little girl but when it has already happened, weshould help out in whatever way we can!

I'm a big dreamer.Nothing can bring me down!

I grew up in a place where the people knew more about how to fix a joint of marijuana than write their own names.

As i grew up i had dreams of becoming a media mogul someday.I was not born of rich parents but my parents managed to eke out and send my brothers and i to the best schools they could afford (government schools). Despite having grown up among people with very little or no ambition, i never let go of my dreams and never will.

Those who know me well know very well that Wesley Magura is a guy with big dreams, i have been known to be a writer, cartoonist and dreamer because since i was little i have never been afraid to show off my talents.

Like anyone with big dreams i have been ridicled, and been told i was too old to be drawing cartoons among other insults but i have never backed down because i believe that in life there are no obstacles, just challenges and that it doesnt matter where you are from all that matters is where you want to be.Believe in yourself and in God!

spiked and raped

This world is full of evil people you know.A friend of mine was just recently faced with the most horrific experience of her adult life.Having grown up in the united states, she came back to zimbabwe but not without having changed, she came back with a thing for parties but little did she know what her new found passion had instore for her.

Its been a fortnight since the night of the party but the memories still linger in her brain and the trauma has made her insomniac. The party was hosted by a friend and
until today, she has not been able to open up to anyone let alone the police.the guy who did it is apparently married and the girl could be pregnant if he rapped her or let alone acquired an STI or worse,AIDS!

Teenage girls sexually harassed online

I just signed up to an instant messaging site and i must say the people ive met are extra-ordinary and their stories even more touching but the one that touched me the most was a rather sad one,its about an innocent girl looking to have fun by meeting new friends online but got a raw deal.

Tambu*not her real name*,like any teenager joined a chat room and got to meet some new friends, mostly male but at that moment shd thought she'd probably meet her prince charming there as the guys sure were charming.Things however changed once she started chating privately with them.

Disgusting as it may seem, the guys started sending her pictures of their penises, she thought they were just pranks but then the guys started sending explicit messages to her.As if that was not enough, she had relationships where the guys were either cheaters or just trying to get into her pants.

Again i ask, why do we do such things to our little sisters guys?Would you want the same to happen to your sister? I Wonder.

Let our little sisters grow!

Its a really crazy world that we're living in, the things that were deemed taboo and outrageous during our fathers' times have become so commonplace noone dares to question them, like the issue of our abused little sisters.

The other day i got lost and met a girl around the age of 14, i asked her for the directions to the street i was looking for.I was shocked that she thought i was trying to ask her out, she even went on to say,"siyana neni waita mufanha" (leave me alone you are too young).I wondered whether i looked too young for a 23 year old or it was simply that she dated older men.

I then discoved that our little sisters know so much about sex and relationships and that its not their fault but older men hate the challenges they are given by women their age and tend to pick on little girls who are naive and vulnerable.

I know you love taking advantage of them but please guys lets not ruin the lives of our little sisters and let them grow up!

Reunion

no matter how prepared you might think you are, there is no knowing how you are going to react when you meet close friends you have not seen for a year

Felicitations By Clement Kunze

Our relationship is immensely spotless
Because i found an individual who complements
And yields so much in dedication and reaches totality.

Ours is a perfect heavenly oriented illustration of an earthly bond,
Untamed and seemingly paranormal that can and must be deduced by the commoner's mind as unreal,
yet to us,
operational,
Condemning triviality and trampling vivaciously on redundancy.

Ours is a hyper-active,
Electro-charged piece of meteor shit
That forged its way to par with reality
And due to its instability
and random manifestations of felicity
Has surpassed reality,
Gnawing a position in the magical.
Ours is lurid,
heavily embellished with achievers' medals,
Lacking opertures,
Lacking avarice,
Lacking nothing.
Felicitations my love,
Felicitations...
Ours has reached Cupid's apex,
Ours is love,
I Love You!

Women History Month

So it its Women History Month, what is it that we are expected to do?Celebrate the lives of our mothers and the women in general or celebrate the lives of particular individuals?Whatever it is, i as an individual am going to Commemorate it in my own way, im going to write about one special woman each and every day for the duration of this week starting today!Check the pages of this blog for more
I Used to think women blogged about fashion, fake boobs and food but reading the stories on the blog fungaineni.wordpress.com i realised that there are women out there who are more human than we-men.
The stories Fungai writes wreak of inspiration and empowerment, some of the thing we-men would never write about like noticing the tinniest of detail in the least places you would expect, like noticing a flower in the middle of a pothole. These details we-men usually totally ignore. The problem with we-men is we are too cynical and i believe the old social construct patriachy has blinkered our judgement,i wish we-men could be just a bit human like the women at herzimbabwe.co.zw they are surely GREAT WOMEN
